competitiveIn times of increasing digitization and a steadily growing threat from cyberattacks, stable IT security is an important prerequisite for a functioning and growing business. Unfortunately, studies show that this insight has not yet reached all managing directors and board members, instead their concern is:

  • Keeping an eye on the cost factor
In times of increasing risks from cybercrime and high fines for data protection violations, higher expenses in the IT security sector are inevitable and a sensible and important investment in strategic planning. Nevertheless, almost a third of IT security managers complain that management continues to view their work more as a cost factor than an asset and do not comprehend the business benefits of security investments.

  • Focusing on averting dangers
Many IT security managers complain that the management is misunderstanding their role, which results in a restriction of IT security. Although they assign themselves an offensive role that drives business growth and secure introduction of new services, many board members and managing directors continue to see their security teams in a predominantly functional role, namely averting cyberattacks.

  • Perceiving IT security employees as scapegoat
The relationship between IT security and the employees beyond the management level could also be better, because many IT managers feel that they are not properly valued. Mainly two tendencies are apparent: on the one hand, the IT security decision-makers complain about a noticeable "non-perception" of their performance, on the other hand they are criticized for possible disruptions to work processes - especially when implementing necessary measures or the introduction of new security guidelines.

In times of a constantly changing threat landscape, strict data protection guidelines and a complex market for security solutions, effective cybersecurity is of strategic importance for businesses. It is shocking that managing directors and board members have not yet recognized this and are therefore missing out on valuable opportunities. The role of the safety manager today is as demanding as it is diverse and must be supported and encouraged by supervisors and employees alike. Because when it comes to safety, all must act in concert.
